YouTube ends experiment that forced users to watch large unskippable ads

YouTube ends experiment that forced users to watch large unskippable ads

Several users last week complained about seeing large unskippable ads on YouTube. The video streaming platform was testing to show up to 10 unskippable ads when watching a video. Now, following complaints and disappointments from users on Reddit and Twitter, the company has concluded the experiment. A YouTube spokesperson confirmed the same to 9to5Google. The spokesperson said that YouTube’s experiments with bumper ads has now ‘concluded’. “At YouTube, we’re focused on helping brands connect with audiences around the world, and we’re always testing new ways to surface ads that enhance the viewer experience. We ran a small experiment globally that served multiple ads in an ad pod when viewers watched longer videos on connected TVs. The goal is to build a better experience for viewers by reducing ad breaks. We have concluded this small experiment,” the report quotes.

After receiving user’s response on long ads via Twitter and Reddit, YouTube clarified that this will not happen with all the videos and that the ads would not be very long. The video streaming platform then confirmed that each ad will be only six seconds long and not more than that. It basically suggests that if there are five ads, then an individual will have to wait for approximately 30 seconds to continue watching a video on YouTube.

But with the spokesperson confirming that the advertisement experiment has concluded, there will be a sigh of relief among YouTube users. In order to watch any video without ads, users can buy YouTube Premium subscription and avail some extra benefits as well. In India, YouTube Premium subscription costs 1,290 for a year, while the YouTube Premium Family plan costs 189 per month. The video company also offers a 30-day free trial for new subscribers. Second option is to use Chrome’s ad blocker extension on their desktop.

YouTube tests 5 unskippable ads: Will users be ‘forced’ to watch more ads?

YouTube tests 5 unskippable ads: Will users be ‘forced’ to watch more ads?

YouTube, a video streaming platform, is reportedly planning to place five ads on a video which will be unskippable. The platform is currently testing this feature to make it a reality soon. At the moment, YouTube shows only two unskippable ads which is still fine for a free user. But, it seems that five ads have irked many, as several users have expressed their disappointment on Twitter. After receiving the tweets on long ads, YouTube tweeted stating that this will not happen with all the videos and that the ads would not be very long. The video streaming platform has confirmed that each ad will be only six seconds long and not more than that. It basically suggests that if there are five ads, then an individual will have to wait for approximately 30 seconds to continue watching a video on YouTube.

YouTube tweeted, “This may happen with a certain type of ad format called bumper ads, since they are only up to 6 seconds long. If you’d like, you can send feedback directly from YouTube via the send feedback tool.” In order to watch any video without ads, users can use Chrome’s ad blocker extension on their desktop. Secondly, users can spend money on YouTube’s subscription and avail some extra benefits as well. Meanwhile, in a recent development, YouTube has announced that it will offer a stripped-down version of its site tailored for schools and colleges, in an attempt to establish itself in the digital education tools market, even as it introduces new features for creators and institutions using the platform for educational content.

YouTube is introducing Player for Education and Courses, which is a feature that will let video creators offer online classes for a fee or free of charge. According to The Verge report, YouTube has announced new tools for creators making educational content on the platform, which include ways to charge viewers for their videos. Interestingly, beginning next year, certain creators will be able to make free or paid “courses,” with playlists of videos set up for audiences, according to The Verge report. “If a viewer buys a course, they’ll be able to watch the content ad-free and play the videos in the background. Courses will come to the US and South Korea first in beta,” The Verge report said.

YouTube Premium Has Its Perks. Here Are Some to Consider

YouTube Premium Has Its Perks. Here Are Some to Consider

There are all kinds of digital subscriptions you can sign up for nowadays—for cloud storage and fitness plans and music streaming and audiobooks—and you simply cannot sign up for every single one. Even if you had the money, you wouldn’t have the time to get your money’s worth. This brings us to YouTube Premium, the paid plan for the video-sharing site that you and billions of other people happily use for free. So why would you pay $12 a month for it? We’re going to outline the perks here, so you can decide whether it’s worth the price. No AdsSitting through YouTube ads isn’t the worst experience you’re ever going to have—most of them can be skipped after a few seconds anyway—but you might be surprised at just how much better the YouTube experience is without the interruptions and hassles. You can try YouTube Premium for free—which we encourage you to do—and that will give you an idea of the difference. It actually saves a significant amount of time, especially if you’re a frequent YouTube user and spend a lot of time on the site or in the app. Also, if you’re using YouTube for music for a party, you won’t have your tunes interrupted every few minutes by an advert. It also helps when you’re presenting clips to other people—at work or in a classroom, for example.Screenshot of YouTube PremiumYou can download videos to your device with YouTube Premium.
YouTube via David NieldBuilt-In Video DownloadsYouTube Premium subscribers can also save videos for offline playback. This works in the YouTube apps for Android and iOS, as well as in desktop web browsers, so that you can take your videos anywhere. No longer do you have to put up with a dodgy internet connection or a lack of Wi-Fi ruining your video streaming. Whether you’re heading to a park or hopping on a plane, you’re able to queue up a selection of clips for your viewing entertainment. In the mobile apps, there’s also a feature called Smart Downloads. This automatically downloads clips that YouTube thinks you will like (based on your recommendations), so you’ve always got something to watch, whether you’re online or off.YouTube MusicYouTube Music, which ordinarily would set you back $10 a year, is included with YouTube Premium—so you’re getting a full music streaming service in the style of Spotify or Apple Music as one of your perks. While YouTube Music might not be quite as feature-rich or as comprehensive as some of its rivals, it has everything that most people need. You can run it through a web browser or through the dedicated mobile apps, and there’s the option to sync tracks to your devices for offline listening. .

YouTube Rolling Out Picture-in-Picture Support on iOS for All U.S. Users, Premium Users Globally

YouTube today announced that it has begun rolling out picture-in-picture support for all iOS users in the United States, allowing iPhone and iPad owners to close the YouTube app when watching a video and continue to view the content in a small pop-up window while doing other things on their devices.

Picture-in-picture support has previously available to YouTube premium subscribers in the United States, but now it is available to all U.S. YouTube users. Google confirmed last year that picture-in-picture support would be rolling out to both premium and non-paying YouTube users and it has been in testing, but it took some time for the feature to be implemented for all. “We recognize this has been a slow roll out for a highly requested feature,” reads the support article on picture-in-picture. YouTube said it wants to “want to thank everyone who shared feedback during experiments and waited patiently for this moment.”
To use picture-in-picture in the YouTube app, just select a video to watch and then exit out of YouTube by swiping upwards from the bottom of the screen. The video will transfer to a mini player that can be moved around the display.
The picture-in-picture feature is available to ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌ devices running iOS and iPadOS 15 and higher, and it will be rolling out over the next several days.
