Mumbai: BMC to keep digital record of students’ health

Each student in BMC’s Mumbai Public School (MPS) will now have a health card from the coming academic year. A software is being developed that will ensure all health-related data of each student is available at one click.
The new academic year will commence in June and the BMC will keep a record of students’ health along with academics.
Reports of all periodical health check-ups, specific health or medical condition of a child, treatments done in the past as well as ongoing medicines will be collated by the BMC education department.
All this information will be available digitally and periodical medical expert tips will also be given to students who need such intervention from time to time.Best of Express PremiumUPSC Key – May 26, 2022: Why and What to know about Hawala Transaction to...PremiumBJP big guns to lend Himachal CM Jai Ram Thakur a hand as corruption, fac...PremiumExplained: The message behind Margaret Atwood’s ‘unburnable&#...PremiumWelcome to the elusive world of crypto mining: Rohtak rig, 3 engineers, R...Premium

According to the education department, it will hold regular health check-ups in schools and records of each check-up will be uploaded on the software. “If any child is seen developing any health issue through these records, proactive action can be taken. In civic body-run hospitals, treatments will be done for free if required,” said an official from the department.
The initiative will be supported by NGOs, officials said.

Mumbai: Set to launch yoga centres, BMC reaches out to resident groups

To set up Shiv Yoga Kendras across the 24 administrative wards in Mumbai, the BMC has started reaching out to resident groups and office-bearers of various housing societies.
It has also called for expression of interest from yoga centres, which are registered for two years with the Yoga Certification Board or the Indian Yoga Institute as per the guidelines and recommendations of AYUSH.
The yoga teachers or instructor to be recruited for the initiative should have three years of experience and be trained in Common Yoga Protocol as per Union government norms.
The BMC plans to start the yoga centres, which would provide free of cost training to people, on June 1.
The civic body had announced in its current budget that it will start 200 yoga centres in the city. The fund will facilitate the logistical arrangements to be made for starting yoga training and recruiting trained teachers or wellness instructors.

Airport-like super premium liquor shops in cities of Maharashtra soon | Mumbai News

Airport-like super premium liquor shops in cities of Maharashtra soon | Mumbai News

They will have self-service, tasting, bar room and trade facility too
MUMBAI: You will soon have a facility to taste, drink and trade premium liquor brands from ‘Super Premium’ liquor shops or markets in the state besides the walk-in and self-service facilities. For this, the area of the shop has to be 601 sq meter and above.
In the ‘Elite’ shops with areas between 71 sq meter to 600 sq meter, only walk-in, self service and tasting areas will be available. However, to set up such super premium and elite facilities, the existing shop holders have to go for an upgrade in their existing licenses by paying the additional excise duty.
Thus the experience of buying liquor within the city would be akin to the present duty-free imported liquor markets inside airports, revealed state excise officials.
Similarly, the niche category liquor made from fruits and flowers such as Mohua and green Cashew cover (kaju bond) will be called ‘indigenous’ Indian made foreign liquor (IIMFL) instead of their earlier country liquor category and will thus be available at a wide range of shops to gain a large customer base.
These major decisions related to excise were taken at the Maharashtra cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
“The decision to create a new category of fruit and flower-based liquor will not only encourage entrepreneurship, but will also bring the niche products in the upscale market for larger customers to buy from a range of premium shops. While states like MP have branded them as heritage liquors, we have named them as ‘indigenous’ IMFL,” explained principal secretary of excise department Valsa Nair Singh.
Besides locally home-based processing units, the farmers and labourers in horticulture and floriculture will benefit immensely due to the decision as such liquors will fetch better prices for them, revealed excise officials. Already, the state has allowed such liquors to be used for blending with other fruit-based liquors.
However, Singh said the duty that was earlier charged on fruit and flower based liquor will now change to Rs 50 per bulk litre from earlier Rs 10 per bulk litre. The retailers said with this new branding premium fruit and flower liquors will be available more reliably and at legitimate costs in the upscale city markets. Moreover, all these decisions will earn a bigger revenue for the state.

Nanar Oil Refinery location: Uddhav Thackeray wrote to PM Modi in January

Nanar Oil Refinery location: Uddhav Thackeray wrote to PM Modi in January

Days after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Maharashtra government seems to be changing its mind on the Nanar Oil Refinery Project in Konkan and is hoping for a revival, it has emerged that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January requesting to consider a new location for the project in the Ratnagiri district.

Sources in the government said Thackeray had written a letter to Modi on January 12 requesting to consider a new site for the project. Instead of Nanar, the Maharashtra government has proposed a land parcel of 13,000 hectare at Barsu village in Ratnagiri district for the refinery and a land parcel of 2,144 acre in Nate village for the Crude Oil Terminal.
Sources said that the CM has justified the new locations stating that “almost 90 per cent land parcel is barren and no displacement of houses/wadis is estimated since the villages are located outside the project area.” Thackeray has said that the land parcel is free from all encumbrances and that it can be used without disturbing the ecological balance.
Thackeray has also conveyed to the PM that the project was initially proposed at Nanar in Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra but it could not be executed due to environmental and rehabilitation constraints. Sources in the government said that the Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (RRPCL) has reportedly given positive feedback about the new locations.
The facility, which was to come up at Nanar, was cleared by the Centre and state government in December 2015 and was to pass through a land spread across 17 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It was to come up as a 50:50 joint venture between Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (RRPCL) — its investors were Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum — and a partnership between the Saudi-owned Aramco and UAE’s National Oil Company.
The government had initiated the process of the land survey when it was shelved suddenly before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 over “environmental concerns” expressed by the Sena following opposition from the locals. The Sena, in fact, had made it a condition of its pre-poll alliance with the BJP ahead of the elections.
The debate on the oil refinery project was revived after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that indications have been given by the Maharashtra government about changing its mind on it.

“There is hope for the revival of the Nanar refinery project as the Maharashtra government seems to be changing its mind about the project in the Konkan region,” said Union Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan, at an event in Mumbai Sunday. He further said that the plan is to reduce the size of the project and build it in Konkan.
Pradhan was in conversation with Loksatta Editor Girish Kuber at the ‘Loksatta Tarun Tejankit Awards 2021’, where awards were given to talented young achievers from different sectors of Maharashtra by the Union Minister.

From coming Sunday, March 27, for four hours every Sunday morning between 6 am and 10 am, some of the roads in Mumbai will remain completely or partially shut for vehicular traffic as a part of ‘Sunday Streets’, an initiative started by Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey to allow the public to spend some quality time on the roads for recreational activities such as yoga, skating, cycling and other cultural sports.

While replying to the people’s comments on social media, Pandey said, “Sunday Streets is to make streets available to citizens with no moving traffic. You can come with families. Play games. Play music. Ride bikes. Do yoga. With streets being totally free. From our side we are going to display our percussion band. Citizens are welcome to have their own.” This Sunday only six locations have been chosen and Pandey said they will try to add more locations every Sunday.
The six roads that have been earmarked for this Sunday are at Marine Drive — a 1.7 km stretch on the Dorabhai Tata Road, Nariman Point, between Murli Deora Chowk and NCPA dead end. In Bandra on the Carter Road, the 2 km stretch between Otters Club and CCD will host the Sunday Street.

In Goregaon, a 500 metre stretch on the Mind Space Back Road between electric pole no. CHCU 085/018 and Jimmy Yogiraj Marg will host the event.
Similarly in D N Nagar in Andheri west, a 600 metre stretch at Lokhandwala Marg, the stretch between Samarth Nagar Mhada Tower and Joggers Park will be blocked. On the Mulund Goregaon Link Road, the 2.5 km stretch from Tansa pipeline to Vinanagar will be blocked.
At Vikhroli, a 2.5 km stretch between the Service Road of Vikhroli bridge south channel and Ghatkopar bridge signal.
