Delhi govt to give final nod to procure 1,500 e-buses in two weeks

The Delhi government is all set to accord its final approval to procure 1,500 electric buses for the Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) fleet in the next 15 days. After this, the work order for induction of the buses will be awarded to the finalised bidders, said an official with the transport department.
According to a senior official, the government has already finalised the bids to purchase 1,500 buses under DTC and is awaiting final Cabinet approval from the Chief Minister. The e-buses will be manufactured by Tata Motors. The transport department has also finalised the bids for 330 electric buses which will be inducted under the cluster scheme.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s target is to push the public to adopt electric buses for their daily commuting needs. Each of these buses are expected to save 0.33 million tons of PM 2.5 and PM 10 in carbon emissions during their life span of 10 years.
Last week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal flagged off 150 e-buses under DTC, and as many as 150 more such buses will be inducted. “Once the final approval comes, the work will be awarded for the induction of the buses. They will start the induction process by the end of this year, but it will take around 14 months for all of them to be inducted,” an official said.Best of Express PremiumRajya Sabha Polls: Heartburn in Congress; party straying from Udaipur res...PremiumExplained: Securing your Aadhaar dataPremiumSpeedy recovery, good take-up across classes: Executive vice president-co...PremiumBehind Aadhaar flip flop: Plaints, confusionPremium

To maintain the 1,500 e-buses, the government is constructing around 12 e-bus depots across the city which will be completed in the next one year.
At present, the city has 152 e-buses. There are a total of 7,205 buses in Delhi, of which 3,912 are under the DTC and 3,293 buses are under the cluster scheme. The buses will be pollution-free and will have state-of-the-art facilities equipped with GPS devices, ramps for the differently abled, panic buttons, CCTV cameras and other security-related facilities.

Children among 31 killed at church fair stampede in Nigeria

A stampede Saturday at a church charity event in southern Nigeria left 31 people dead and seven injured, police told The Associated Press, a shocking development at a program that aimed to offer hope to the needy. One witness said the dead included a pregnant woman and many children.
The stampede at the event organized by the Kings Assembly Pentecostal church in Rivers state involved people who came to the church’s annual “Shop for Free” charity program, according to Grace Iringe-Koko, a police spokeswoman.
Such events are common in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, where more than 80 million people live in poverty, according to government statistics.
Saturday’s charity program was supposed to begin at 9 a.m. but dozens arrived as early as 5 a.m. to secure their place in line, Iringe-Koko said. Somehow the locked gate was broken open, creating a stampede, she said.Best of Express PremiumRajya Sabha Polls: Heartburn in Congress; party straying from Udaipur res...PremiumExplained: Securing your Aadhaar dataPremiumSpeedy recovery, good take-up across classes: Executive vice president-co...PremiumBehind Aadhaar flip flop: Plaints, confusionPremium

Godwin Tepikor from Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency said first responders were able to evacuate the bodies of those trampled to death and bring them to the morgue. Security forces cordoned off the area.
Dozens of residents later thronged the scene, mourning the dead and offering any assistance they could to emergency workers. Doctors and emergency workers treated some of the injured as they lay in the open field. Videos from the scene showed the clothing, shoes and other items meant for the beneficiaries.
One witness who only identified himself as Daniel said “there were so many children” among the dead. Five of the dead children were from one mother, he told the AP, adding that a pregnant woman also lost her life.
Some church members were attacked and injured by relatives of the victims after the stampede, according to witness Christopher Eze. The church declined to comment on the situation.
The police spokeswoman said the seven injured were “responding to treatment.”
The “Shop for Free” event was suspended while authorities investigated how the stampede occurred.
Nigeria has seen similar stampedes in the past.
Twenty-four people died at an overcrowded church gathering in the southeastern state of Anambra in 2013, while at least 16 people were killed in 2014 when a crowd got out of control during a screening for government jobs in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

BJP stirs controversies, you stay silent: MP to Governor

BJP stirs controversies, you stay silent: MP to Governor

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday accused West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar of remaining silent when BJP leaders make controversial statements and insult Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Addressing a public meeting at Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas district, Banerjee took at dig at Dhankhar’s statement that he had “crossed the red line”, saying there was no need for such reaction as he did not name any judge or mentioned any particular judgment.
Banerjee said, “A citizen of this country is free to criticise a judgment of a court. A day before yesterday, I made some remarks. The governor claimed that I crossed the red line. People of the state are well aware of who is crossing the line. I had said that in judiciary, 99 per cent of people are good, only 1% of them follow the instructions of those who control the levers of power.”

“If I say something about the judiciary, the Governor reacts to it. I have full respect for the judiciary. But tell me who is crossing the red line?” he asked.Best of Express PremiumUPSC Key – May 30, 2022: Why and What to know about ‘Mission Karamyogi’ t...PremiumExplained: Mona Lisa — widely loved, frequently attackedPremiumExplained: Kashi Vishwanath in Sangh focus — first in 1959, but rarely th...PremiumExplainSpeaking: What to look for in Provisional GDP estimates for 2021-22?Premium
The TMC leader claimed that BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Biplab Deb and others have criticised the judiciary. “Have you seen the Governor criticising these leaders?” he said. Questioning the credibility of the CBI, Banerjee said the agency did not call all of those named by the firm owner in the Sarada chit fund scam.
Banerjee said that the doors of his party are closed for the time being for leaders who defected to the BJP and want to return. He made the statement in the presence of Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh who recently returned to TMC, three years after defecting to the saffron camp.

“Many traitors are lining up at our doors with the plea to return. I am asking you whether I should open the door or keep it closed,” he said.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “If they have no fear why are their leaders running away from CBI probe? This is nothing but an attempt to motivate party workers who have been demoralised by probes against their leaders.”

Recently, however, she talked about a “#dharamsankat” pertaining to a bra situation — to wear or not to wear it. Mittal wrote that while her surgeon has asked her to “wear tight bras for support”, her “radiotherapy doctor says to wear no bra or loose ones”.

“Although I try to listen to them both and find a middle ground, this weekend I came to the farm and for the travel I wore a sports bra… which was not the best decision,” the Shitty Ideas Trending actor wrote in the caption accompanying a selfie.Best of Express PremiumUPSC Key – May 30, 2022: Why and What to know about ‘Mission Karamyogi’ t...PremiumExplained: Mona Lisa — widely loved, frequently attackedPremiumExplained: Kashi Vishwanath in Sangh focus — first in 1959, but rarely th...PremiumExplainSpeaking: What to look for in Provisional GDP estimates for 2021-22?Premium
She continued, “I feel swelling and pain, which could be due to the rude shock of the travel or maybe mild side effect of the radiation, but nevertheless… chillin’ like a villain [because] this will be over before I know it!”

According to Dipalee Borade, consultant, radiation oncology, Apollo Cancer Centres, Navi Mumbai, after surgery, a bra is advised for support to the breast to avoid pain and stretching over the scar, till a proper healing happens.

“Complete scar healing takes place around 4 to 6 weeks. During radiotherapy, one should avoid any friction over the irradiated site, so doctors will advise not to wear bra or wear loose cotton bra,” she tells indianexpress.com, adding that the skin basically becomes more sensitive during radiotherapy, so any sort of rubbing will increase the skin reaction.

“One can wear loose cotton bra during radiotherapy and one week after completion. Afterwards, they are free to wear any kind of bra and prosthesis,” Dr Borade concludes.

India for a rules-based, peaceful environment in Indian Ocean region, says Rajnath

India for a rules-based, peaceful environment in Indian Ocean region, says Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has stressed the importance of maritime preparedness in the constantly changing global scenario, terming it as a crucial aspect that safeguards the economic and strategic interests of a nation.
Addressing the annual commanders’ conference of the Indian Coast Guard on Monday, Singh said there had been a shift in India’s maritime security needs due to the ever-evolving global situation.
Referring to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Singh said the incident “showed that for a long time, the country’s orientation was focused on the security of land borders and not much attention was paid to coastal security”, according to a statement issued by the defence ministry. However, the country has not witnessed any terror activity from the sea route since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, he said.
Speaking about the importance that a free and open Indo-Pacific holds for India’s maritime security, Singh said the “growing regional and global trade in this region has brought forth new challenges. Geopolitical tensions and clash of strategic interests have led to traditional security challenges. Terrorism, drug trafficking and piracy are some non-traditional challenges in front of us today. The entire region is being affected by these challenges. Being a responsible maritime power, we have a clear interest to create a rule-based, peaceful and stable environment. Such a rule-based environment is essential for both regional and global prosperity. In such a situation, the ICG has a big role to play.”Best of Express PremiumUPSC Key – May 30, 2022: Why and What to know about ‘Mission Karamyogi’ t...PremiumExplained: Mona Lisa — widely loved, frequently attackedPremiumExplained: Kashi Vishwanath in Sangh focus — first in 1959, but rarely th...PremiumExplainSpeaking: What to look for in Provisional GDP estimates for 2021-22?Premium
Singh said India’s geographical location in the Indian Ocean region (IOR) was crucial from the strategic and economic points of view. “Our long coastline with deep-water ports, a prosperous Exclusive Economic Zone and islands at both ends present a unique position. The IOR accounts for more than two-thirds of the world’s oil shipments. One-third of bulk cargo and more than half of container traffic pass through it. The safety of these sea routes is not only directly connected to our economic interests, but it also establishes India as a net security provider in the IOR,” he said.

The Coast Guard’s role, he said, is not limited to coastal areas. Singh called the force the protector of India’s national interests and sovereign rights in the territorial seas and the Exclusive Economic Zone. “There have been no reports of any breach in coastal security in the last 14 years due to the ICG’s dynamic strategy and its cooperation with the Indian Navy and local administration,” he said.
