After Apple spilled the beans in its iPad video, the developer DaVinci Resolve has detailed the feature set for the release expected before the end of the year.
The forthcoming release of DaVinci Resolve for iPad was first revealed by Apple in its introduction to the new iPad Pro models. Now details of the app’s features and pricing have been announced, alongside the news that it will launch before the end of the year.
“DaVinci Resolve for iPad is truly a revolution for post production,” Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO, said in a statement. “Customers will have the power of Hollywood post production tools for editing and color correction literally in their hands, creating a whole new generation of creative editors and colorists.”
On the Mac, Windows, and Linux, DaVinci Resolve is a video editing suite that competes with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. Its main app is free, with certain limitations that tend to concern only the most high-end video production professionals.
Those professionals are served by a separate app called DaVinci Resolve Studio, which adds advanced HDR grading, more audio plugins and video filters, and so on. Blackmagic Design says this same model will apply to the iPad.
On release, DaVinci Resolve for iPad will be a complete video editing app that is free, but comes with an optional in-app purchase for an upgrade to a separate DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad.
Blackmagic Design has not revealed a price for the in-app purchase to upgrade to DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad. Its existing desktop equivalent costs $295.
The app is to be available for all iPads, but it is optimized for the M2-based iPad Pro. Blackmagic Design says the app requires iPadOS 16, and its features include:

  • Color pages and the app’s cut page optimized for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro display.
  • Supports HDR display on 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip
  • Up to 4x Ultra HD ProRes render performance improvement with the M2 chip
  • Compatible with DaVinci Resolve 18 project files
  • Supports multi-user collaboration via Blackmagic Cloud
  • Supports H.264, H.265, ProRes and Blackmagic RAW media files
  • Supports clips from iPad storage, Photos library and iCloud
  • Import clips from external USB-C disks
  • Works with Apple Pencil, Magic Trackpad, Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio

It’s not clear what features come free, and which are premium.
“Compatibility with DaVinci Resolve 18 [for Mac] and Blackmagic Cloud, mean that customers can collaborate on the same timeline with other editors or colorists as well as audio engineers and VFX artists from literally anywhere in the world,” continued Petty. “I think it will be exciting to try out the new iPad version and I can’t wait to see how our customers use it, their creativity will be mind blowing.”

If DaVinci Resolve for iPad contains all of the functionality of its desktop version, it will be the first high-profile video editing app to come to the iPad complete. Adobe has previously released a cut down version of its video editor as Adobe Premiere Rush, and Apple has its entry-level iMovie already installed.
There is no Final Cut Pro for iPad. Industry professionals are reportedly pressing Apple to be more proactive with the development of its video editor.

Google Pixel Buds Pro: Superior noise cancellation at the premium end

Google Pixel Buds Pro: Superior noise cancellation at the premium end

The Google Pixel Buds Pro offers high quality ANC, seamless pairing, good battery life and a pleasing audio – at a premium price
Sales of TWS, or wireless earbuds, have soared in recent times. The market for the device in India alone jumped 60% in Q1 2022, compared to the same period last year, according to Counterpoint research. Companies are actively pushing products one after another. In the subcontinent, the product’s price bandwidth ranges between ₹2,000 and ₹20,000.(Sign up to our Technology newsletter, Today’s Cache, for insights on emerging themes at the intersection of technology, business and policy. We received a pair to review, and spent a good amount of time with the product to tell you how it felt.
Design
Google has designed the Buds Pro in the usual format, having a pebble-like case with the buds inside the oval shaped nests. The design is neat and the build quality feels sturdy in its matte finish. The case comes with a Type-C port which is convenient to charge, and a physical reset button on the back. It will help in connecting to new devices. The front has an LED that blinks when the case is opened up. It indicates pairing and battery status as well. The orange light suggests that the buds are low on battery whereas the white blinking light confirms it is fully charged. The buds have a peculiar design as well; they look more like a mouse when placed on flat surfaces. They don’t really go very deep into the ear canal and thus avoid in-ear pressure. In my case they fit well enough, but I had to adjust them or push deeper while on the move. The Buds themselves are lightweight and easy to wear; they are water and sweat resistant, and hence have a wide variety of use cases.
Connectivity
The Pixel Buds Pro pairs with two devices simultaneously, but can be used with only one at a time. I have been using it on Android and iOS without any hiccups. Google’s fast pairing makes it connect in a second with Android devices. The Fast Pair app lets users select other functions for the Buds as well and is handy to have on the playback device. There is a Pixel Buds app that collects statistics regarding the seal check. This will suggest tips and tricks for an immersive audio experience. You can also use the Google Assistant on the buds with a tap, after setting it up on the app first.
Performance
The Google Pixel Buds Pro has a remarkable active noise cancellation (ANC) feature that is intelligent in many ways. The transparency mode makes it the preferred TWS for a long period of use. The ANC works perfectly on the Pixel Buds Pro to cut out the extra noise. Even the swirling of air couldn’t pass through it, which makes it a suitable choice for office calls. The transparency mode is similar to an open-air design, which we noticed in the Sony LinkBuds. It allows some ambient noise to make us aware of the surroundings, without amplifying it.Also Read |Google Pixel 6a: History and Pixel repeat themselvesThe touch controls on the buds are responsive as well. You can control the volume, skip tracks and trigger the Assistant with the Pixel Buds Pro, thanks to a sensitive interface. The volume can be adjusted by swiping forward and backward on the buds. Tap once to play or pause the audio and to answer a call. Do it twice for the next song or to reject the call. For the previous track, you have to tap it thrice. Sound output on the Pixel Buds Pro is fine. You won’t get very discerning clarity where you can distinguish between the instruments, but overall, the feeling is conveyed. The Pixel Buds Pro is meant for daily users and not very ardent audiophile buyers, where details matter. Having said that, the audio on the Buds Pro is pleasing to say the least. The bass and treble are present but do not expect them to go along with higher levels of volume.
Battery
The Google Pixel Buds Pro goes for seven hours of playtime. The case stores an additional 12 hours for them to go on for a longer duration as required. The buds get charged quickly and even a 10-15 minutes charge is good enough to give it an hour of playback. The Pixel Buds Pro supports wireless charging as well, but takes ages to charge completely.
Conclusion
The Google Pixel Buds Pro offers high quality ANC along with seamless pairing, good battery life and a pleasing audio. The transparency mode adds an additional layer for listeners to use it for long periods of time. The call clarity on the Pixel Buds Pro is great as well. Despite these features, Google Pixel Buds Pro falls in a difficult terrain of premium TWS where competition is brutal and tastes are more refined and developed. .

Google Won’t Shut Down Your Legacy G Suite Account After All

Google Won’t Shut Down Your Legacy G Suite Account After All

Google finally launched a solution for people with “legacy” G Suite Google accounts. After initially threatening to shut down free G Suite accounts if users didn’t start paying for the service, Google has completely backed off. Once users jump through some sign-up hoops, Google will allow their ~16-year-old accounts to continue functioning. You’ll even get to keep your email address. The saga so far, if you haven’t been following, is that Google has a custom-domain user account service, currently called “Google Workspace” and previously called “G Suite” and “Google Apps.” The service is mostly a normal Google account that lets you use an email that ends in your custom domain name rather than “@gmail.com.” Today this service is aimed at businesses and costs money each month, but that was not always the case. From 2006 to 2012, custom domain Google accounts were free and were even pitched at families as a geeky way to have an online Google identity. In January, some bean counter at Google apparently noticed this tiny group of longtime users was technically getting a paid service for free and decided this was unacceptable. Google posted an announcement in January declaring these people “Legacy G Suite users” and basically told them, “Pay up or lose your account.” These users signed up for a free Google service and stored data on it for as long as 16 years, and there were no indications it would ever be charged. Google held this decade-plus of user data hostage, telling users to start paying business rates for Workspace or face an account shutdown.A week later, after the inevitable public outcry, Google relented somewhat and said vaguely that it would eventually provide “an option for you to move your non-Google Workspace paid content and most of your data to a no-cost option.” Saying you’ll be able to keep “most of your data” that you’ve been accumulating for 16 years is a rather alarming statement. Google’s one bit of specifics in January was that “this new option won’t include premium features like custom email,” so you’d have to stop hosting your email with Google, and you’d presumably have to go through some wild Google account conversion process. It then let these users anxiously flap in the wind, with no further details, for six months. How to Save Your Free G Suite AccountIn May, Google finally told these users what would happen to their accounts. The new support page says, “For individuals and families using your account for non-commercial purposes, you can continue using the G Suite legacy free edition and opt out of the transition to Google Workspace.” The link for that is here or in your G Suite admin panel. You’ll need to confirm that your G Suite account is for personal use, and not business use, because businesses are still expected to pay for Workspace. If you already bent to Google’s will and started paying for Workspace because of the January announcement, Google says you should contact support. The biggest news from this latest announcement is that Google has decided against taking people’s custom email away. A second support page says, “You can continue using your custom domain with Gmail, retain access to no-cost Google services such as Google Drive and Google Meet, and keep your purchases and data.” It now sounds like there will be no changes to your account, provided you click through the “self-transition” screen before the deadline. The deadline to opt out of an account shutdown, which has changed several times now, is June 27, 2022. If you don’t complete this opt-out by June 27, you will be automatically billed for Workspace. If you don’t have a card on file and don’t opt out, your account will be suspended on August 1 and shut down. The automatic enrollment and billing, without explicit user consent, is one of the wilder parts of this story. If you don’t closely follow the tech news scene, there’s a good chance you won’t know this is coming, and you will either suddenly be billed without your consent or find that your Google account has suddenly stopped working. For a company whose key business pillar is convincing users to store vast amounts of data on its servers, playing games like this is a bizarre decision. At least it came to a reasonable conclusion. This story originally appeared on Ars Technica. .
