The Detroit Lions could not come to terms with one of the top-ranked safeties in this year’s free-agent class. Former New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Williams, 25, has agreed in principle to a long-term contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Many presumed the talented safety would be coveted by Detroit, due to his ties with members of the Lions’ coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Williams recorded 15 interceptions in his five years playing in the Saints’ defense. The Lions’ defensive scheme requires a lot from the safety position. Adding a player who was considered the best safety available could have complemented Tracy Walker, whose play has steadily improved over the past couple of seasons. williams5© Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sportswilliams5© Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sportswilliams5© Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY SportsAccording to Sports Illustrated, “Perhaps the most enticing prospect in free agency not named Davante Adams, Williams checks all the boxes as a franchise building block. He’ll enter next year in his age-26 season, coming off his best year against the pass (an opposing quarterback completion percentage under 50%) and one of his best seasons as a tackler. Williams has perfected the art of center fielder in Dennis Allen’s offense but also adds a certain thickness as a front-seven defender if he has to crawl into the box.”Recommended Lions ArticlesSince being selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft (No. 42 overall) out of the University of Utah, the veteran defensive back has played in 76 career games. In five seasons in the NFL, he has also recorded three forced fumbles, one tackle for loss, 38 passes defensed and 239 solo tackles. Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was drafted in the same draft class by the Saints, described Williams as a “freak athlete,” when he addressed reporters after signing his new contract. “He’s a hard worker. Super talented. Super athletic. He’s young, but he’s wise and experienced. He’s started since day one in New Orleans,” Anzalone said. “Honestly, he’s a freak athlete and a great guy. He does all the right things and one of the guys that you definitely want in your locker room.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions NFL free agency news re-sign Charles Harris

Detroit Lions NFL free agency news re-sign Charles Harris

The Detroit Lions continue to re-sign their own free-agents. One day after re-signing safety Tracy Walker, the Lions will re-sign Charles Harris after a stellar debut campaign in 2021. The agreement is reportedly worth $14 million over two seasons. After bouncing around the league the first couple of seasons in his career, Harris produced for the Lions in his first season in Motown. “You mentioned Charles Harris, a guy who arguably had his best year, in my opinion. A guy that was just in a better place,” general manager Brad Holmes explained to reporters. Recommended Lions ArticlesBeing in a defensive system that best utilized his abilities allowed the 27-year-old defensive end to record 7.5 sacks last season. “You saw previously guys worked him inside, 5 technique, even in some systems all the way down to the 4i, and that’s not what he’s built to do,” linebacker coach Kelvin Sheppard told reporters last season. “He’s built, in my opinion to play on the edge. He’s a very physical, a quick-twitchy player so he gets on and off of blocks well and he does things that a lot of other people — you have to have a motor to do a lot of the things that Charles Harris does on tape, and it’s non-stop from the first whistle to the last.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions re-sign wide receiver Kalif Raymond

Detroit Lions re-sign wide receiver Kalif Raymond

The Detroit Lions are continuing to re-sign many of their own free agents. After bringing back Josh Reynolds and adding D.J. Chark Jr. in free agency, Kalif Raymond will also remain in the team’s wideouts room in 2022. The 5-foot-8, 182-pound wideout proved to be a versatile weapon for the Lions’ offense in 2021.According to SI All Lions writer Christian Booher, “The speedy wideout was an important piece of the Lions offense in 2021 in addition to handling punt return duties. He didn’t do anything spectacular in the return game, but showed the ability to burn out of position defenders when given the chance. He caught 48 passes for 576 yards and four touchdowns in 2021, and Campbell found creative ways to get him involved after taking over play-calling duties in Week 10.”Quarterback Jared Goff complimented Raymond’s practice habits, and referenced that the 27-year-old practices just as hard as Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods, his former teammates with the Los Angeles Rams. Recommended Lions Articles”I think I’ve been lucky to work with some really good receivers who practice hard and like, he practices hard. Cooper Kupp was the same. Robert Woods was the same. Brandin Cooks was the same, and Kalif is the same in that way, where you know where he’s going to be. You can trust him,” Goff told reporters. “You can rely on him and he’s accountable, and that’s all you can ask for as a quarterback.”

Detroit Lions free agency news Tracy Walker returns

Detroit Lions free agency news Tracy Walker returns

The Detroit Lions have reached a new contract agreement with one of their coveted free agents. According to ESPN, the Lions and safety Tracy Walker have reached an agreement on a new three-year, $25 million contract. The extension also includes $17 million in guaranteed monies. In 2021, Walker secured his only interception of the season against the Packers in the season finale. Heading into free agency, the talented 27-year-old was among the priorities for the Lions’ front office to retain. “Both him and I believe, for as good as his year was, there is vast room for improvement,” Aubrey Pleasant told reporters at the Senior Bowl. “And I think collectively, if we get a chance to maybe work together again in the future, maybe you guys can see the same progression that maybe you’ve seen over the past year.”Recommended Lions ArticlesFollowing the season, Walker expressed his desire to remain a part of the rebuilding Lions, as he developed trust with the new coaching staff. “I think the communication aspect of Tracy has improved drastically,” defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn explained. “We ask a lot of our safeties, we really do. And the one thing he’s done, he’s bought into everything that we’re trying to get done in this defense as far as a safety’s perspective, and he’s grown. He’s grown in that, and he’s also become a leader as far as linebackers, as far as getting everybody together and watching some tape. That’s what we expect of our safeties.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated!
