Demand push: Rubber industry looks to double exports by ‘25

The $2-billion non-tyre rubber sector is aiming to double its exports by 2025, according to the All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA).
AIRIA president Sawar Dhanania said the global market for rubber products which is estimated at around $212 billion today is also expected to grow by 2025. “Because MSMEs are so important to India’s economy and commerce, we believe that India’s free trade agreements (FTAs) should include provisions to address the special concerns, demands and barriers that MSMEs may face while doing business in foreign markets,” Dhanania said at a meeting of the association in Mumbai.
He said the government should take steps to ensure that the terms of the FTAs benefit the MSMEs for internalisation, with trade facilitation mainstreamed in MSME development goals. “MSMEs can work world-wide by creating a level playing export infrastructure, improving their financing conditions, educating them about suitable marketing channels and facilitating their working with trading companies,” he said.
Shashi Singh, senior vice president of AIRIA, said, “Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and the export promotion councils should educate MSMEs on export procedures, documentation requirements, and the finer points of export.” “We expect IIFT and the EPCs should share export market intelligence and arrange specialist meets. It will be beneficial to individuals who are new to exports and wish to understand how to become export-ready,” Singh said.Best of Express PremiumTavleen Singh writes: Another exodus in Kashmir?PremiumExplained: ‘Tibbeyan da putt’ and the Moosewala connectionPremiumExplained: Engaging with the TalibanPremiumUrban agriculture can help make cities sustainable and liveablePremium

“In the last 1-1.5 years, the government released Rs 55,000 crore under MEIS incentives as a reward. There are 13 trade agreements under which 12 are already implemented. Under India and the UAE agreement, 97% of Indian products exported get the direct benefit,” said Ramesh Holiachi, Joint Director General of Foreign Trade.

“The India and Australia agreement is yet to be notified by the Indian government. The Australian government has provided geo-duty concessions to India…. 91-97% of Indian products will get duty concession in the Australian market. Footwear, pharmaceuticals and textile industry in India will benefit from this agreement,” said Holiachi.
AIRIA said the rubber industry has a huge potential for exporters as India is a labour-intensive market. “Due to Covid-19 and Ukraine war crisis, there have been a host of problems like availability of raw materials, increase in shipping prices and challenges to the cash flow. India has the highest cost in logistics at 17-18 per cent,” AIRIA said.

Behind Aadhaar flip flop: Plaints, confusion

Behind Aadhaar flip flop: Plaints, confusion

An advisory by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) cautioning users against sharing a photocopy of the document was issued after its regional office in Bengaluru received complaints about Aadhaar details of some people being photoshopped and misused, government officials said.
The advisory was withdrawn by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Sunday on account of it being “misinterpreted”. Instead, the Ministry said, Aadhaar holders are “advised to exercise normal prudence in using and sharing” their card details.
“After UIDAI’s Bengaluru office received some complaints of Aadhaar details being altered using photoshop, they were alarmed by the possibility of its misuse. So they issued a statement urging people to not share photocopies of Aadhaar with unauthorised entities. But the advisory was causing a lot of confusion and could have been misinterpreted,” an official in the know said.

The initial advisory, issued last Friday, said citizens should share their Aadhaar details only with entities that have a “user licence” from UIDAI. It did not specify how to verify this user licence. It added: “Do not share photocopy of your Aadhaar with any organisations because it can be misused. Alternatively, please use a masked Aadhaar which displays only the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number.”Best of Express PremiumRajya Sabha Polls: Heartburn in Congress; party straying from Udaipur res...PremiumExplained: Securing your Aadhaar dataPremiumSpeedy recovery, good take-up across classes: Executive vice president-co...PremiumBehind Aadhaar flip flop: Plaints, confusionPremium
While withdrawing the advisory, MeitY said, “Aadhaar identity authentication ecosystem has provided adequate features for protecting and safeguarding the identity and privacy of the Aadhaar holder”. It added that people should exercise “normal prudence” while sharing their Aadhaar details, without elaborating on what “normal prudence” constitutes. Queries sent to the UIDAI did not elicit a response until publication.

Friday’s advisory caught people by surprise who took to social media to complain that they regularly share photocopies of Aadhaar for a range of services from getting SIM cards, opening bank accounts, and checking into hotels, among other things. The advisory also appeared to be in stark contrast with a contention made by UIDAI’s former chief and then TRAI chairman RS Sharma, who in 2018 had shared his Aadhaar number on Twitter, challenging a user to show a “concrete example” of how the number could be used to “harm” him.
While critics have routinely flagged privacy-related risks of Aadhaar, a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), released in April, noted that UIDAI had not ensured that the applications or devices used by agencies or private firms for Aadhaar authentication were “capable of storing personal information… which put the privacy of residents at risk”.

In 2018, the Supreme Court had struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, which essentially allowed private entities to collect citizens’ Aadhaar details. While reading down the provision, the top court had called it “unconstitutional”. Soon after the judgment, however, the UIDAI had clarified to banks that Aadhaar know-your-customer (eKYC) can be used to authenticate beneficiaries of government subsidies and welfare schemes, paving the way for private banks to use the document to identify beneficiaries of government welfare schemes.
A few months later, the Centre issued the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019, which allowed banks and telecom operators to collect Aadhaar details as a proof of identity. After the Centre launched the Covid vaccination programme, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court in 2021, claiming that the Aadhaar card was being mandatorily insisted upon for administering vaccines. The government then informed the top court that Aadhaar was not mandatory for registration on CoWin.

Choice between pre-tax and Roth 401(k) plans trickier than you think

Choice between pre-tax and Roth 401(k) plans trickier than you think

Prathanchorruangsak | Istock | Getty ImagesWhether you’re a current employee or changing jobs, you may need to choose between pre-tax and Roth 401(k) contributions, and it may be trickier than you expect. Here’s the difference: Pre-tax 401(k) deposits reduce your adjusted gross income, and the money grows tax-deferred, meaning you’ll pay levies on withdrawals. By contrast, Roth 401(k) contributions don’t provide an upfront write-off, but earnings are tax-free.However, there may be other tax trade-offs, so you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons before diverting funds, financial experts say.More from Personal Finance:

There’s an ‘un-retirement’ trend amid this hot job market
How to beat back rising prices with Memorial Day dealsRoughly 86% of 401(k) plans offered a Roth account in 2020, up from 75% in 2019, according to the Plan Sponsor Council of America.”In general, the goal is to take deductions at a higher tax rate and distributions at a lower one,” said certified financial planner Ken Waltzer, co-founder and managing partner of KCS Wealth Advisory in Los Angeles. If you plan on more income or higher taxes in retirement, tax-free withdrawals from Roth contributions may make sense, and tax-deferred contributions may be better if you expect lower earnings and levies. But that’s not always a winning strategy, according to Michelle Gessner, a Houston-based CFP and founder of Gessner Wealth Strategies.”Investors are quick to discard the idea of making Roth contributions if they are in a high tax bracket because they want the deduction that comes with a regular 401(k) contribution,” she said. However, the upfront write-off may not be worth it if you worry about the consequences of taxable required minimum distributions, she said. Social Security and Medicare costsWhen someone withdraws tax-deferred money from a 401(k), it boosts their income, which may trigger levies on Social Security and hike Medicare premiums. The formulas for Social Security taxes, Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D use so-called modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI.If half of your Social Security payments plus MAGI is more than $34,000 ($44,000 for a joint return), up to 85% of those benefits may be taxable. However, the bigger issue for retirees above certain income levels may be the surcharge for Medicare Part B, known as the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, or IRMAA.  While the base amount for Medicare Part B premiums is $170.10 for 2022, payments go up once income exceeds $91,000 ($182,000 for joint filers). The calculation uses MAGI from two years prior.     Roth withdrawals, however, won’t show up on tax returns, said Gessner, meaning retirees don’t have to worry about these distributions causing Medicare premium increases.Diversify taxesSince no one can predict future tax rates, you may also consider creating a mix of pre-tax and after-tax funds from a diversification standpoint, experts say.”It is great when clients have both Roth and traditional retirement savings,” said Catherine Valega, a CFP and wealth consultant at Green Bee Advisory in Winchester, Massachusetts. If you have both pre-tax and after-tax funds, it may provide more options to craft an efficient retirement income plan, she said. .

A look inside the Boca Raton mansions commanding Miami Beach prices

The $28.5 million mansion that recently hit the market in Boca Raton, FL located at 2633 Spanish River Rd.Danny PetroniUltra-high-end real estate in Boca Raton, Florida, is on a stratospheric rise, breaking record sale prices every year for five consecutive years. And the price per square foot of the town’s top-end homes is now on par with Miami Beach pricing.  “People tend to think of Miami when the subject turns to high-end South Florida real estate,” said Douglas Elliman real estate agent Senada Adzem, “But Boca Raton is, without question, one of the region’s premier luxury residential markets.”The all-time top sale in the town, located about 45 miles north of Miami and 28 miles south of Palm Beach, traded last year for $24.5 million, delivering a price per square foot of more than $2,800, according to public records. That’s more than four times the average $670 price per square foot for a luxury home, representing the top 10% of sales, in Boca. The record sale also tops the average price per square foot achieved in Miami Beach, at $2,766, according to the most recent Elliman Report for Q1.”Trophy properties have gained momentum in the South Florida market over the past three years — for tax benefits, for safety reasons, and because of the pandemic,” Adzem told CNBC.The great room at 2633 Spanish River Rd in Boca Raton, FL.Danny PetroniThis year’s already seen three more mega-homes hit the Boca market, each one priced to break last year’s record and push the town’s high-end even higher. Here’s a closer look at the three highest-priced homes for sale in Boca Raton:169 West Key Palm RoadThe twilight view of 169 W Key Palm from the waterway.Danny PetroniThe waterfront home at 169 West Key Palm Road was listed this week for $26.9 million.
