The Detroit Lions all of a sudden have a log jam at the wide receiver position. It will be interesting to observe how many wideouts Detroit’s coaching staff decides will make the opening week roster. Early roster projections from several analysts have the Lions keeping at list six wide receivers on the roster, including Cephus, Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds, and Kalif Raymond. Cephus, along with Tom Kennedy, Trinity Benson and undrafted free agent Kalil Pimpleton will all likely be battling to earn a spot on the roster and for playing time. As Jeff Risdon of USA Today’s LionsWire explored, “Reserves need to make an impact on special teams. That’s not something Cephus has shown he can do in the NFL. Meanwhile, he’s competing for a roster spot with Kalif Raymond, Tom Kennedy, Trinity Benson and even undrafted rookie Kalil Pimpleton. All of those players offer more on special teams than Cephus, who also happens to be the slowest afoot of that group on a team that has made getting faster a major priority.”Here is a look at the other Lions news this weekend. Scroll to ContinueRecommended Lions Articles

Detroit Lions NFL roster news waive Javon McKinley Jalen Elliott

Detroit Lions NFL roster news waive Javon McKinley Jalen Elliott

Prior to rookie minicamp, the Detroit Lions needed to make room for their undrafted free agents. After releasing six players earlier this week, the team announced on Thursday morning that two more players are no longer on the roster. It was announced that safety Jalen Elliott and wide receiver Javon McKinley were waived. A total of eight players have been waived since the start of the week. Elliott saw action last season after getting elevated from the practice squad. He handled 16 snaps on special teams in the Lions loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The following week, Elliott played 24 defensive snaps, the first of his NFL career, in a blowout loss to the Eagles. With the addition of rookie safety Kerby Joseph and veteran DeShon Elliott, the 23-year-old’s position on the roster became less and less likely. Scroll to ContinueRecommended Lions ArticlesMcKinley had a similar journey last season, as he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad. The former Fighting Irish wideout signed with the Lions as an undrafted rookie free agent, after not being drafted. Many NFL pundits believed it was going to be a challenge for McKinely to crack Detroit’s lineup in his rookie campaign. With the addition of DJ Chark in free agency and Jameson Williams added in the draft, McKinley’s chances of earning playing time were diminished. Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions Aidan Hutchinson rookie contract details NFL salary cap

Detroit Lions Aidan Hutchinson rookie contract details NFL salary cap

The No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft is often rewarded with a hefty rookie contract that also includes a healthy signing bonus. In 2021, the No. 2 overall selection, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, secured a rookie contract worth $35.1 million over the four years, including a $22.9 million signing bonus. Hutchinson is expected to sign a similar rookie contract, projected to be worth approximately $35.7 million over four years, according to Spotrac. The 21-year-old defensive lineman joked at his opening press conference in front of Detroit media and his family that he was planning to live in the basement of his parents home, since they are not located too far from the practice facility. ”It’s been discussed. I think I’m going to live in the basement,” he joked. “No, it’s definitely going to make the transition easier. I don’t know where I’m going to live yet. I found out a couple hours ago that I’m going to stay in Detroit. I’ve got to go house hunting real quick. I’m excited. Just being home is definitely going to make this transition to the NFL easier.”Scroll to ContinueRecommended Lions ArticlesJoin the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions 2022 Undrafted NFL Free Agent Tracker

Detroit Lions 2022 Undrafted NFL Free Agent Tracker

The Detroit Lions walked into the 2022 NFL Draft with eight total picks, and walked out with eight players selected. It doesn’t mean that Detroit general manager Brad Holmes wasn’t wheeling and dealing, however. He made two draft-day deals, including trading up to get Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams in the first round at No. 12 overall. His second trade of the weekend came on Day 3, when he swapped pick No. 181 for picks No. 188 and No. 237. With those acquired selections, Detroit took Oklahoma State linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez
and Jackson State EDGE James Houston, respectively.     Holmes believes the Lions added some “foundational pieces” through this year’s draft cycle. “There’s a lot of narratives about all the drafts. They’ll say, ‘Oh, this is a strong draft. This is not a strong
draft,’ and all that. If you think it’s strong or not as strong, sometimes it’s like, ‘Hey, look, if it’s not as
strong, just trade back, trade back.’ Well, you keep trading back, and it’s not as strong as what everybody’s
saying,” Holmes told reporters this weekend. “So, if you just stay patient and you have your board stacked right, there were some good football
players that we were able to acquire that we think can be foundational pieces.”Now that the draft has concluded, it’s on to the undrafted free-agency portion of the offseason.   In 2021, the Lions inked 13 undrafted free agents to contracts, including the likes of cornerbacks Jerry Jacobs and AJ Parker. Both of them made major contributions to Detroit’s secondary as rookies. Below is the running list of undrafted free agents added by the Lions:Scroll to ContinueRecommended Lions ArticlesUSATSI_18174797_168388382_lowresKirthmon F. Detroit Lions NFL free agency news sign safety DeShon Elliott

Detroit Lions NFL free agency news sign safety DeShon Elliott

The Detroit Lions have added another safety to the roster, again looking to the Baltimore Ravens. After signing linebacker Chris Board in free agency, Detroit has added safety DeShon Elliott to the roster, signing the 24-year-old to a one-year contract, according to NFL Network. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Detroit’s defense was seeking to pair another defensive back with safety Tracy Walker, as Will Harris may eventually switch full-time to the cornerback spot. Besides Walker and Brady Breeze, Detroit does not have any safeties signed beyond the 2022 season. Elliott was drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Scroll to ContinueRecommended Lions Articles“He really understands the defense. He understands how we organize the coverages. He understands what responsibilities he has, or what opportunities he has, to make certain calls and put us in the best situation,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said last year. “He’s doing a great job of that. He was good last year, and he got better as the year went on. But, this year, he’s taken it to another level that way.”Detroit could also continue to add defensive backs via the draft. Safeties Kyle Hamilton, Daxton Hill and Kerby Joseph are all potential candidates to join Detroit’s roster. Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated!
