Apple sends out invites for September 7 ‘Far Out’ event; iPhone 14 Max, high-end ‘rugged’ watch expected

Apple sends out invites for September 7 ‘Far Out’ event; iPhone 14 Max, high-end ‘rugged’ watch expected

Apple sent out invitations Wednesday announcing September 7 as the date for its flagship iPhone launch event, where the company is expected to also introduce other gadgets like news iPads and Apple Watches ahead of the holiday season.
The event, with the tagline “Far Out”, will be streamed online on YouTube and Apple’s website. Apple launch events have been virtual since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic but starting with this year’s WWDC, the company has shifted its focus to a more hybrid approach, calling select media to attend the events.
Apple’s September event is dedicated to new iPhones and this year won’t be any different. Expect four new iPhone 14 models — or whatever they may be called — to be unveiled by CEO Tim Cook and team.

For the past few years, the iPhone lineup has been consistent, consisting of two entry-level models and two high-end models. While the standard iPhone 14 model will still drive sales, Cupertino may look at increasing the market share of its ‘Pro’ lineup in the high-end smartphone market, which is on the upswing due to an increase in the flow of cash in the hands of young, affluent consumers. The current rumour mill points to changes being made to its iPhone 14 lineup, with a clear distinction between standard and pro models. That will not only simplify the lineup but also increase the ASP (Average selling price) of the iPhone and improve Apple’s market share in the smartphone market.
The standard iPhone 14 won’t likely get any groundbreaking features. In fact, it will look very similar to last year’s model, featuring the same notch, dual-camera setup on the back, with a marginal increase in performance and battery life. Despite a gloomy economic outlook and increase in manufacturing costs, Apple may not change the price of the iPhone 14 and keep selling the most-popular iPhone model at $799 to remain competitive with Android devices from Samsung and OnePlus. The $799 will become the new starting price for the iPhone range.
But one iPhone 14 model that many hope could be in high demand during the festive season will be a new ‘Max’ variant. Analysts and insiders predict Apple will replace the $699 iPhone mini with the $899 iPhone 14 Max, the latter model will boast a 6.7-inch display but offers the same features and design as the standard iPhone 14. This model gives Apple a scope to charge more from consumers, thanks to the big-screen display and bigger battery. The $899 iPhone 14 Max will be positioned as an ‘aspirational’ device despite still being a mid-range offering.
For people willing to pay even more for smartphones, Apple will offer two ultra-premium smartphones — the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both models will see notch-less displays, a 48-megapixel camera, a new A16 processor and improved battery life. A $100 price increase on the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max is likely in store, given component price increases as well as added functionality. Many experts believe that there’s still room for Apple to go higher and a $100 price hike might not have a negative effect on sales of its ‘Pro’ lineup. Because consumers are willing to pay for larger screens and advanced features, the demand for iPhone 14 Pro lineup will continue to be high.
All four iPhone 14 models will also reportedly get an expensive new front-facing camera, which could be the reason why Apple is under pressure to increase the prices of its iPhones. The iPhone 14 launch event will also give Apple the opportunity to highlight iOS 16, the update to its mobile operating system announced in June. The free upgrade is expected to be rolled out to all new and old iPhones later in September.

Beyond iPhones, trade pundits expect Apple to release three new Apple Watch models: the Apple Watch Series 8, an updated Apple Watch SE, and an Apple Watch geared toward extreme sports. The sports model is expected to have the company’s largest smartwatch display to date, along with a bigger battery, rugged metal casing and a brand new sensor to detect fevers by taking the wearer’s body temperature.
The extreme Watch model is expected to cost more, with the price upwards of $900. With the ‘rugged’ Apple Watch model, experts hope Apple will get into a niche but extremely profitable watch segment aimed at hikers and athletes. Garmin is the biggest player in the extreme smartwatch segment.
Apple’s September 7 event comes at a time when high inflation tops consumers’ worries and demand for smartphones continues to fall. However, Apple is performing better than its peers and its iPhones remain bestsellers despite softening smartphone demand otherwise. In emerging markets like India, Apple has benefited from the expansion of the premium smartphone segment. The recall value of the brand alongside the strategy to keep the prices of its iPhones higher than the competition is working for Apple, despite a tiny market share.
With Samsung recently making headlines with the launch of Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, analysts cautioned that expecting a foldable phone from Apple could be premature. Instead, analysts expect Apple to announce new services to keep consumers locked in the ecosystem. It will be interesting to see how Apple plans to make its iPhones more accessible, a hardware subscription model would make a lot of sense.

Steve Jobs wanted original iPhone to have no SIM card, claims iPod inventor Tony Fadell

Steve Jobs wanted original iPhone to have no SIM card, claims iPod inventor Tony Fadell

The original iPhone brought the tech industry to a new era, and made smartphones the most essential tool in our lives. But did you know that Steve Jobs, Apple’s c0-founder, wanted the first iPhone to be SIM-free? While promoting his new book Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making at the Computer History Museum, “Father of iPod” Tony Fadell revealed that Jobs’ vision for the iPhone was to have a connected device without a SIM card slot. The revelation was made by Fadell in an interview with journalist Joanna Stern.
Fadell revealed that Jobs wasn’t a big fan of the iPhone having a physical SIM card slot. Instead, he wanted it to be a seamless device stating “we don’t want another hole in it.” According to Fadell, Jobs wanted Apple to use CDMA technology in its iPhone to connect to cell towers, rather than GSM. Fadell said he had to show convince Jobs that CDMA technology adoption was too low to be sustainable for the iPhone. Eventually, Apple did launch a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 but the SIM tray persisted

Apple does offer eSIM functionality on its iPhones but the feature is limited to a few countries. An iPhone without a physical SIM card is something Apple has been dreaming up for years, and looks like the time is near when the company actually launches the device without the actual SIM card tray. In fact, rumour has it that the iPhone 15 Pro models might not ship with a SIM card slot, paving way for a SIM-free iPhone.

The Cupertino giant is set to launch the iPhone 14 later this year, and based on leaks, the new lineup might include a lot of internal changes. Last week, a new report indicated that Apple is planning to ditch the Lightning port in the iPhone in favour of USB-C, in part to comply with the European Commission’s proposal that a USB-C connector will become the standard port for all smartphones and tablets.

Apple Music app available on Roku – Digital TV Europe

Apple has brought the Apple Music app to Roku devices.
The iPhone maker’s music streaming service is now available on any Roku device including Roku streaming players, Roku TV models, and Roku premium audio products like the Roku Streambar Pro.
Apple Music offers access to over 90 million songs and 30,000 expert-curated playlists ad-free on the Apple Music app. The Apple Music app also allows users to watch music videos in 4K on compatible devices and sing along to their favourite songs with time-synced lyrics.
Roku users can sign-up to Apple Music through the Roku channel store for a 1-month free trial, after which point plans are available from US$9.99 per month.
This is the latest evidence of Roku’s growing platform business. Last week, the company announced that the platform unit grew 39% year-over-year to US$365 million during Q1 2022. Users consumed 20.8 billion hours of streamed content in the quarter.

How do I know where my game is?

Having more to watch also means finding your game may be more difficult. The just-concluded NCAA men’s basketball semifinals and final used to air on CBS. This year they were on TBS. Hulu and ESPN+ stream National Hockey League games. But ABC, ESPN and TNT broadcast NHL games you might see through your cable package.

The best way may be to conduct a basic Google search. When it comes to baseball, cable TV and DirecTV remain the most reliable way to watch your local team, Swann says. They are the most likely to carry your regional sports network compared with other options.

“But if you go with cable or DirecTV, you’ll have to pay their prices, which are more than what live streaming services charge,” he says.

Die-hard baseball fans willing to cut the cord and give up other pay TV services may find it’s worth spending $139.99 annually to get the MLB.tv streaming subscription. The service lets you watch live and on-demand home and away broadcast feeds for every Major League game with one big catch: Unless you’re out of town, your home-market games are blacked out.

That may be too expensive if you’re more of a casual baseball fan or have limited income. Do you subscribe to the baseball package and give up, say, your $19.99 a month premium Netflix subscription, or perhaps your $14.99 a month tab to watch HBO Max in 4K without ads?

The NBA sells League Pass subscription packages to watch all its live basketball games for one team for $13.99 a month, with certain blackout restrictions, or $29.99 a month to stream all the teams ad free, again with restrictions.

Google suspends its paid services of Play Store and YouTube in Russia

Google suspends its paid services of Play Store and YouTube in Russia

Google is suspending all its paid services in Russia that include Play Store and YouTube. It means that Google users in the Russian territories will not be able to make purchases in-app or pay for subscriptions, renew it or subscribe a new one. YouTube also offers premium content ad-free with monthly, quarterly and annual packages. This came after Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions on the country by US.

On the contrary, the apps available for free on Google owned Play Store continue to work and are available as well in Russia.

“Due to payment system disruption, we will be pausing Google Play’s billing system for users in Russia in the coming days. This means users will not be able to purchase apps and games, make subscription payments or conduct any in-app purchases of digital goods using Google Play in Russia. Free apps will remain available on the Play Store,” Google said.

After the announced sanctions by the American President, Joe Biden, the companies that are based out of US are following this path of either stopping their services completely or partially.

Tech giants such as Twitter and Apple have already announced restraint from their side.

“We are committed to complying with all applicable sanctions and trade compliance laws and we continue to monitor the latest guidance. Users in affected regions will still be able to use Google Play, including downloading free apps, but unable to make purchases,” it added.
