The Detroit Lions could not come to terms with one of the top-ranked safeties in this year’s free-agent class. Former New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Williams, 25, has agreed in principle to a long-term contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Many presumed the talented safety would be coveted by Detroit, due to his ties with members of the Lions’ coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Williams recorded 15 interceptions in his five years playing in the Saints’ defense. The Lions’ defensive scheme requires a lot from the safety position. Adding a player who was considered the best safety available could have complemented Tracy Walker, whose play has steadily improved over the past couple of seasons. © Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

© Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY SportsAccording to Sports Illustrated, “Perhaps the most enticing prospect in free agency not named Davante Adams, Williams checks all the boxes as a franchise building block. He’ll enter next year in his age-26 season, coming off his best year against the pass (an opposing quarterback completion percentage under 50%) and one of his best seasons as a tackler. Williams has perfected the art of center fielder in Dennis Allen’s offense but also adds a certain thickness as a front-seven defender if he has to crawl into the box.”Recommended Lions ArticlesSince being selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft (No. 42 overall) out of the University of Utah, the veteran defensive back has played in 76 career games. In five seasons in the NFL, he has also recorded three forced fumbles, one tackle for loss, 38 passes defensed and 239 solo tackles. Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was drafted in the same draft class by the Saints, described Williams as a “freak athlete,” when he addressed reporters after signing his new contract. “He’s a hard worker. Super talented. Super athletic. He’s young, but he’s wise and experienced. He’s started since day one in New Orleans,” Anzalone said. “Honestly, he’s a freak athlete and a great guy. He does all the right things and one of the guys that you definitely want in your locker room.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions NFL free agency news re-sign Charles Harris
The Detroit Lions continue to re-sign their own free-agents. One day after re-signing safety Tracy Walker, the Lions will re-sign Charles Harris after a stellar debut campaign in 2021. The agreement is reportedly worth $14 million over two seasons. After bouncing around the league the first couple of seasons in his career, Harris produced for the Lions in his first season in Motown. “You mentioned Charles Harris, a guy who arguably had his best year, in my opinion. A guy that was just in a better place,” general manager Brad Holmes explained to reporters. Recommended Lions ArticlesBeing in a defensive system that best utilized his abilities allowed the 27-year-old defensive end to record 7.5 sacks last season. “You saw previously guys worked him inside, 5 technique, even in some systems all the way down to the 4i, and that’s not what he’s built to do,” linebacker coach Kelvin Sheppard told reporters last season. “He’s built, in my opinion to play on the edge. He’s a very physical, a quick-twitchy player so he gets on and off of blocks well and he does things that a lot of other people — you have to have a motor to do a lot of the things that Charles Harris does on tape, and it’s non-stop from the first whistle to the last.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Detroit Lions free agency news Tracy Walker returns
The Detroit Lions have reached a new contract agreement with one of their coveted free agents. According to ESPN, the Lions and safety Tracy Walker have reached an agreement on a new three-year, $25 million contract. The extension also includes $17 million in guaranteed monies. In 2021, Walker secured his only interception of the season against the Packers in the season finale. Heading into free agency, the talented 27-year-old was among the priorities for the Lions’ front office to retain. “Both him and I believe, for as good as his year was, there is vast room for improvement,” Aubrey Pleasant told reporters at the Senior Bowl. “And I think collectively, if we get a chance to maybe work together again in the future, maybe you guys can see the same progression that maybe you’ve seen over the past year.”Recommended Lions ArticlesFollowing the season, Walker expressed his desire to remain a part of the rebuilding Lions, as he developed trust with the new coaching staff. “I think the communication aspect of Tracy has improved drastically,” defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn explained. “We ask a lot of our safeties, we really do. And the one thing he’s done, he’s bought into everything that we’re trying to get done in this defense as far as a safety’s perspective, and he’s grown. He’s grown in that, and he’s also become a leader as far as linebackers, as far as getting everybody together and watching some tape. That’s what we expect of our safeties.”Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated! Trey Flowers will not suit up again for the Detroit Lions. The Lions have reportedly informed the veteran defensive end that he will be released on the first day of the new league year, according to Lions beat writer Dave Birkett.“Yeah, you know Trey, you’re talking about the ultimate glue guy, ultimate leader,” general manager Brad Holmes said. “He’s what we’re all about, in terms of grit and being just a football player. So it was unfortunate what he had to deal with, but again, those discussions are going to be forward down the road.”The 28-year-old would have carried a salary-cap hit of $23.2 million for the 2022 season and $23.6 million for 2023.Since signing back in 2019, Flowers struggled to consistently remain available. He only appeared in 14 games the past two seasons.New defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn attempted to have Flowers play more outside linebacker during his first season in Motown, but he ended the 2021 season on injured reserve.Recommended Lions ArticlesAustin Bryant and Julian Okwara were called upon to fill in when Flowers was absent. Flowers contract was worth $90 million and included $56 million in guaranteed money. The Lions will save at least 10 million in cap space after moving on from the former New England Patriot.Join the AllLions CommunityBecome a premium AllLions member, which grants you access to all of our premium content and gets you a FREE subscription to Sports Illustrated!
