THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-Davao launched the first premium taxi service in Davao City on April 8, 2022 in line with the National Government’s Taxi Modernization Programme.The 10 premium taxis boast modern features, such as free internet access to passengers, on-board navigation system (GPS) or mobile-based application, dashboard and occupancy cameras with continuous recording of the past 24-hour operation, and automatic fare collection through cashless cards.“This is what we want. Safe, comfortable, convenient, and obviously, kaaya-aya na paglalakbay dito sa siyudad ng Davao,” LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III said during the launching event at Eden Nature Park and Resort.The premium taxi units are classified as Silver Taxi based on LTFRB Memorandum Circular 2019-032 Taxi Modernization Programme. The other classification is Gold Taxi.The two are differentiated by the body type of the vehicle, passenger capacity, and other parameters on minimum settings and specifications such as displacement, power rating, legroom, and luggage compartment.In addition, the flag down rate for Silver taxis are P50 with P2.50 per minute rate and P17.50 per kilometer rate, while Gold taxis will have a flag down rate of P60, per minute rate of P3, and per kilometer rate of P20.50.The premium taxi units are also only the first ten of minimum 30 units per fleet of a franchise awardee. In this case, franchisee Cymae Transpo OPC is the first awardee to provide premium taxis in Davao Region.For the whole Davao Region, 250 Silver Taxis and 200 Gold Taxis are allowed, for a total of 450 premium taxi units.To ensure safety measures for both passengers and operator, the premium taxis have undergone inspection, road test, and sealing by LTFRB-Davao.According to LTFRB-Davao, there are still 240 Silver taxi slots that need to be fulfilled out of the 250 total count.“Under the leadership of LTFRB-Davao regional director Llanos, we are very confident that we will complete those units before the end of the administration,” Department of Transportation Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure lawyer Mark Steven Pastor said.Davao City and Davao Region are one of the select cities in the country for the Taxi Modernization Programme, which include Baguio City in the Cordillera Administrative Region; Iloilo and Bacolod cities in Western Visayas; Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue cities in Central Visayas; Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities in Northern Mindanao; and Metro Manila.
